You’ve worked hard to help make your business successful, but something as small as a frayed electrical cord could turn into a large fire and wind up costing your company millions of dollars.

When was the last time you took a fire safety survey and asked yourself critical questions about your business’ safety procedures? Are you actively assessing your business on a regular basis to ensure a fire doesn’t spark up? It only takes a few minutes, but a couple of simple questions could help you more closely review your property, assets, people, and processes to help ensure preventative strategies are being followed.

Question of the Month: When we hire non-exempt employees, they don’t really perform any “work” for the first few days on the job. All they do is complete training and fill out paperwork. Do we need to pay them for this time, since they aren’t actually “working” yet?
Attorney Rick Alaniz provides guidance for employers in approaching OSHA inspections.

It is a fundamental right of every employee to be safe in the workplace, and workplace safety is closely monitored by the Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) – a branch of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). For more than 50 years, OSHA has issued rules and guidelines, generally referred to as “standards,” intended to improve workplace safety. Employer compliance with these standards is enforced through OSHA workplace inspections and audits. The agency conducts thousands each year and the inspections and audits serve as the primary process whereby OSHA identifies safety hazards and unsafe practices in workplaces.

As a business owner, you know that your employees are an important asset of your business. Each business has individuals with specialized skills, knowledge, and valuable customer relationships that are critical to its success. If your business relies heavily on key employees, it may suffer tremendously without those individuals and it may be a good idea to think about investing in key person life insurance.

Education

Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners, acting on the authority granted by the legislature, has paved the way for students who successfully complete a high school/trade school program to immediately test to become licensed tradesman plumbers.

Texas Workforce Commission's Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) Program supports those efforts by providing funds for training equipment supporting in-demand occupations like plumbing. The JET Program provides grants to public junior, state and technical colleges, open enrollment charter schools, and school districts to purchase and install equipment for the development of career and technical education courses or programs that lead to a license, certificate or postsecondary degree in a high-demand occupation.

In a rush? Our digital correspondence option is the quickest way to complete your CE. Students will receive a digital copy of our book and an open-book 150-question exam that you can take at your own pace. There are two options when choosing the most recent correspondence courses: Digital Only and Standard.

When choosing the Digital Only option, you will receive a link to download the course and can get started right away! When choosing the Standard option, we also ship you a packet (USPS Priority) with a physical copy of the book and all course materials.

Please note: correspondence testing is not an option for students looking to rank up to a Tradesman or Journeyman license, but is a viable option for renewals.

The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners has been working diligently to improve processes, communicate updates that impact plumbing licensees in Texas and revise Board Rules. With so much new information coming down the pike, we've compiled these updates online for you!

Home and business owners go to great lengths to minimize damage and ensure their plumbing systems are safe, efficient and sustainable. While there's no guarantee that everything will go exactly as planned, hiring a licensed professional will provide increased assurance of protection.

Members of PHCC Texas are licensed by the State of Texas and the public can be confident that they will be employing someone with the necessary skills and commitment to high standards.
