Pursuant to House Bill 636, all applicants and licensees will soon be required to submit a copy of their fingerprints so that the TSBPE can conduct a criminal history check. That means all plumbers in the state of Texas, regardless of license type, will be required to have their fingerprints on file with the TSBPE.

In January we let go our Administrative Assistant. We told her the truth that the position was not needed. She is a minority female over age 52 and we parted on good terms. We would now like to hire a newly created position of "Services Coordinator" that will not answer phones and will do tasks that are clerical in nature but of a higher level than were being done by the AA. Some tasks will overlap from the AA job. Is the company opening itself up to any issues?

Not until the last several years, while intermittently dealing with an acute lack of available applicants to fill job vacancies, have employers begun to more frequently struggle with the decision of whether to discharge a poor-performing or problem employee or give the employee yet another chance. While always a distressing event, while there was an continuous stream of job-seekers applying, and the knowledge that employees were employed at will – the relevant concerns about terminating an employee did not include serious ramifications on operational capacity.

At the outset of the pandemic in March 2020, the TSBPE took aggressive measures to temporarily suspend the yearly Continuing Education course required by Texas State law. As part of that program, many licensed plumbers were granted a Disaster Relief CE extension. TSBPE has designated July 31, 2021 as the cutoff for fulfilling the 2020 or 2021 CE requirement.

A college student pays to learn a life skill. They make an investment that they hope will pay dividends in the future (and many times accumulate debt that takes years to pay off). The best thing about an apprenticeship is that for the most part, the employer pays for the training and pays them to learn on the job. And many times they will earn more in a lifetime than the student with a 4 year university degree.
