USCC sent a letter last month recommending and agreeing to join a task force proposed by the US Department of Agriculture to study the effects of persistent herbicides. Additionally, USCC called out the position of NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service) that the consideration of downstream impacts, like the effects of residual herbicides on garden plants when contaminated compost is used, is outside the US EPA’s responsibility under FIFRA ( Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act), urging that they be considered in this context.
“As documented in the comments received from home gardeners in the PID of Clopyralid and in the cases reported through our confidential reporting form, these herbicides are clearly having negative economic and social impacts,” the letter stated.
