Compost Facility Legislative Tour Recaps: Spotsylvania County and the Foodbank Inc.

This past summer, several USCC members hosted legislative tours of their compost facilities and operations, inviting state and federal legislators to take a glimpse into how our industry works and how they can continue to advocate for our shared mission of building healthier, more sustainable communities.

On Aug. 12, Spotsylvania County, located in northeastern Virginia, hosted Virginia state legislators and U.S. legislators staff at its Livingston compost facility. The tour included a Q&A regarding the facility, and each attendee received a five-gallon bucket of compost and literature, including a snippet of the facility's permit, a guide on its composting process, laboratory results and USCC material.

Legislators in attendance were Virginia House Delegates Bobby Orrock and Phil Scott and staff for U.S. Sen. Mark Warner and Rep. Abigail Spanberger. Todd Williams of Jacobs Solutions Inc., who designed the facility, also attended the tour to answer questions and educate about the USCC's stance on PFAS and the burden legislation has placed on composters.

The Foodbank Inc.

The Foodbank Inc., located in Dayton, Ohio, hosted two legislative tours this past August, demonstrating their hydroponic greenhouse and urban garden.

On Aug. 13, they hosted Ohio State Rep. Willis E. Blackshear, Jr., Dayton Mayor Jeffrey J. Mims, Jr. and City Commissioner Chris Shaw, the Dayton Sustainability Office, and several other Dayton city government representatives.

On Aug. 19, the Foodbank hosted Ohio State Sen. Bob Hackett and State Rep. Bill Dean, Dayton City Commissioner Matt Joseph, Montgomery County Commissioner Carolyn Rice and Treasurer John McManus, and staff for U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown.
