Chapter Spotlight: North Carolina Composting Council’s Grant to Every Tray Counts

The North Carolina Composting Council in 2018 awarded a $2,500 grant to Every Tray Counts, a NCCC and USCC non-profit member that focuses on helping individual schools to use compostable or reusable products and cut back on their lunchtime waste,

Sue Scope, who began the organization, told the NCCC: "Your grant made it possible to take another step in our work to expand the reach of ETC. ETC is the bridge between the school district bureaucracy, the solid waste department, the school itself and the food service department in any area of NC.

"We have finished our new website, which accents the School Kit, and also completed the School Kit itself. We are helping another school in Wake County get started with a Full Pilot program and have met with representatives from Chatham County schools. They are considering replacing all of their polystyrene trays with compostable ones and have begun that effort. I have met with a representative of Charlotte/ Mecklenburg schools this past week, and their response is very positive.

"The website and School Kit have already begun to allow us to work with schools that are outside of the triangle area. We have also finalized a 'School Kit Supply List' that we can offer to a school that is interested in a Full Pilot, but doesn't have the financial resources to begin."
