USCC Chapter Focus: Michigan Organics Council/Michigan Chapter

USCC’s Michigan Chapter, known in the state as the Michigan Organics Council, is making sure organics and composting are part of the discuss at the Michigan Recycling Coalition’s 37th Annual Conference, to be held May 14-16 at the Ann Arbor Sheraton. It is especially timely because Michigan’s legislature established a Renew Michigan Fund at the end of last year to support planning and grants for recycling and organics management projects (applications for which are due soon).

Organics related sessions on May 15:

• Compost Heats Up – a DEQ session about potential legislation
• Stakeholders & Studies: Building Up to Public-Private Partnerships – a case study of a Central Ohio effort to capture organics for management
• The Promise & Pickle of Compost – exploration of the research needed to document the benefits of compost

On Thursday, May 16, there will also be a session on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs) and our developing understanding of the contaminant, especially in landfills and biosolids.
