Ten-week, paid summer internship with the US Composting Council
Deadline: May 21, 2022
The USCC is excited to announce the launch of our 2022 Environmental Apprenticeship Program. This year, we will be offering three PAID internships for undergraduate and graduate students in various areas that include environmental advocacy, marketing and data management.
If you, or someone you know, are interested in a career in the environmental non-profit field and compost industry, don’t miss this opportunity!
Environmental Advocacy/ Policy Internship Position (Graduate Level)
The USCC is working on several projects this summer, depending upon your focus.
FARM COALITION: Every five years, the farm bill is passed by Congress and signed by the President, impacting farmers, farming practices, consumers and the environment. As an Environmental Apprentice, you will help the USCC build a Farm Bill Coalition by researching farm stewardship groups across the country and developing a strategy to approach the partners and build this coalition. This effort will prove crucial to introducing and solidifying the position of the compost industry in a sustainable food and farming future. Additionally, your work on the Farm Bill will overlap with measuring the effectiveness and accessibility of newly acquired grassroots advocacy software and related development plans.
ZONING IMPLEMENTATION: In February, 2022, the USCC launched the Model Zoning Template, which guides municipalities and new compost facilities through many challenges in planning and decision-making. This project involves working with staff to determine target states for the Zoning Template rollout by researching county zoning infrastructure, exploring possible conferences, publications and groups to interview, and developing a plan based upon your research, with the goal of increasing Model Zoning Ordinance implementation.
GOVERNMENT AGENCY OUTREACH: The USCC’s goal is to grow its presence and name recognition with regulators at state and federal level. For example, the USDA is a leading agency focused on effective management, best available science, economic opportunities, natural resources conservation and healthy soils, where discussions around composting as a sustainable action against climate change are of high interest to USCC stakeholders. In this project, you will compile a list of officials from targeted states, along with the USDA’s Business and Industry development contacts, and develop a plan for awareness among these targets. You will also be assisting staff with creating and distributing an "info brief” that will be shared with multiple agency, department, and grant coordinators.
