POSITION: US Composting Council - Compost Market Manager
POSITION REPORTS TO: Executive Director
Established in 1990, the US Composting Council (USCC) is the only national organization in the United States dedicated to the development, expansion and promotion of the composting industry. The USCC achieves this mission by encouraging, supporting and performing compost-related research, promoting best management practices, establishing standards, educating professionals and the public about the benefits of composting and compost utilization, enhancing compost product quality, and developing training materials
for compost manufacturers and markets for compost products. USCC members include compost manufacturers, compost marketers, equipment manufacturers, product suppliers, academic institutions, public agencies, nonprofit groups and consulting/engineering firms.
POSITION SUMMARY
This position is charged with developing and expanding compost use in the U.S. through the Seal of Testing of Program referred to as the STA CertifiedTM Compost Program, cultivating and maintaining relationships among program participants, specifiers, members, customers and committee members and working with staff to grow the use of compost, especially STA CertifiedTM Compost.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee daily STA CertifiedTM Compost Program operations, recruiting and reporting.
- Develop a detailed understanding of the STA CertifiedTM Compost Program and database.
- Provide assistance to program participants, compost specifiers and end users, analytical labs and the public with information about compost analysis, uses and general industry questions.
- Set annual goals and budget for recruitment and retention of STA CertifiedTM Compost Program participants and certified labs in alignment with the USCC Strategic Plan.
- Develop the business case for use of compost and STA CertifiedTM Compost Program product certification, using marketing methods such as individual letters, newsletters, brochures or presentations at meetings.
- Recruit program participants and members in collaboration with the Marketing Team using successful promotional or marketing methods, (direct mail, newsletters, email, web content, brochures and meeting/webinar/conference presentations)
- Using metrics to evaluate program effectiveness for continued innovation and expanded outreach.
- Coordinate, monitor and/or supervise the activities of assigned contractors.
- Serve as liaison with state agencies and STA laboratories.
- Work with the Compost Analysis Proficiency (CAP) Program Manager to maintain lab proficiency standards and metrics.
- Maintain STA CertifiedTM Compost Program alignment with the USCC Strategic Plan.
- Serve as staff to the STA Advisory Committee and the Market Development Committees.
- Work with appropriate partners on collaborative projects, conferences, webinars and other activities designed to expand compost use and STA participation.
- Assist program staff when needed to advise applicants and participants of required information.
- Provide backup when necessary for new member onboarding.
- All other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Experience and familiarity with the operation of compost facilities
- Background in horticulture, compost sales, or business development
- Strong facilitation, interpersonal and presentation skills
- Ability to work independently as well as function effectively and collaboratively in a team environment
- Ability to monitor, analyze, consult and report on programs and services
- Advanced organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks
- Excellent command of English language and grammar, both written and verbal
- Proficient with computer applications and a thorough understanding of Microsoft Office and the ability to learn and master other computer technology/software programs as needed
- The candidate should be able to earn their Certified Compost Operations Manager or Certified Compost Professional Certification within a year.
- Excellent follow-through and persistence
PREFERRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Coursework or degree in agronomy, agriculture, horticulture or the soil sciences.
- Compost sales or marketing experience
- Database/development experience, especially with Applications
POSITION TYPE/LOCATION
This full-time position has a 30% travel requirement and can be virtual or hybrid in the Washington, DC metropolitan area or the Raleigh, NC area.
