COMPOST USE
Hot on the heels of last month's sweeping national plastic pollution proposal, there's a new federal waste bill in town. The Zero Waste Act, introduced by Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. as a "key part of the Green New Deal," would provide up to $250 million in funding for "zero waste" initiatives - including organics recycling infrastructure, e-waste recycling or reuse, source reduction and market development.
Kroger is asking the Environmental Protection Agency to set industry standards that would eliminate food waste. The head of the EPA met with company leaders today to hear what the roadblocks are. The grocery chain says it wants to end hunger in communities it serves and eliminate waste by 2025.
Conventional agriculture was targeted in the most recent repor tfrom the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in which a panel of 100 scientists concur not only that the food system contributes 37% of greenhouse gases, but also that a more sustainable agriculture can help address global warming.

Certain assets of Harvest New England LLC and Harvest Mid-Atlantic LLC compost, mulch and soil operations in Connecticut and Maryland have been purchased by WeCare Denali through its wholly owned subsidiary, WeCare Denali, LLC, said Andy McNeill, president and CEO.
USA Waste of California, Inc., dba Waste Management, has acquired two Harvest Power California, LLC compost facilities located in Tulare and Lathrop, CA. Each compost site is permitted to take up to 156,000 tons of organics per year.
It is with great sadness that we note the recent untimely death of Trish Andre of Andre Farms, Ohio, who was killed in a car accident. Trish was an agronomist, a farmer, Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) and past Extension Advisory Committee member and chair. She was a passionate 4-H advisor of the Pettisville Ever-Ready 4-H Club, active in Wauseon FFA Alumni and volunteer for many things in her community with her husband Nate. The EPA solicits applications under the EPA Sustainable Materials Management Program for the benefit of the EPA Region 2 areas of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. While an application submitted must benefit Puerto Rico and/or the U.S. Virgin Islands, it may also benefit areas elsewhere in EPA Region 2 (i.e., New York, New Jersey).
The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers competitively awarded grants to qualified small businesses to support high quality research related to important scientific problems and opportunities in agriculture that could lead to significant public benefits. Projects dealing with agriculturally related manufacturing and alternative and renewable energy technologies are encouraged across all SBIR topic areas.
