Proven Technology for Windrow Composting
Brown Bear Corporation
Brown Bear’s aerator provides an economical solution for building windrows, blending bulking agents or additives, pulverizing, aerating and water mixing for aerobic composting. The machine’s reverse rotation works the complete windrow from the bottom up and to the side. This machine works directly into material forming it into a windrow. The design makes for ease of use and repair. The intermittent aerator flights are reversible, bolt-on, constructed from abrasion resistant carbon steel.

“Truly compostable packaging is the next step in getting waste out of landfills.  Accepting compostable packaging helps our customers divert more food waste by simplifying the sort process, and delivers more valuable food scraps to our piles.” – Marc Morgan, Solid Waste Manager, City of Lebanon

COMPOST USE
The Senate balked at voting for a bill that has been debated for much of the past six years to prevent food waste from being dumped primarily in landfills and incinerators. A similar bill had won approval last summer but was conditionally vetoed by Gov. Phil. Murphy, largely because it gave too many exemptions allowing food waste to be sent to garbage dumps or incinerators.
A new study by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) Office of Solid Waste Reduction & Recycling found that more than half of the waste schools send to landfills could be prevented.
U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell is citing the discovery of PFAS in Ann Arbor’s compost as another reason to ban use of the toxic chemicals in food packaging. The Dearborn Democrat’s legislation to institute such a ban was the focus of what she called a key hearing before the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s health subcommittee Wednesday, Jan. 29.
Emerging efforts by cities and the federal government show that progress is possible, but experts say systemic changes are still needed.

MEMBER NEWS
Welcome to all our new members for January and February!

We are excited that the Seal of Testing Assurance Program (STA), is celebrating its 20th year! The program was created in 2000 and is the consensus of many of the leading compost research scientists in the United States. There is no other compost testing program available to compost manufacturers or end users that gives you this type of information. The science behind the development of the STA Program and the various tests that are used is contained in the Test Methods for the Examination of Composting & Compost manual (TMECC). The lab proficiency standards are upheld through the Compost Analysis Proficiency (CAP) program.
CREF NEWS

With an outpouring of generous support from many companies and individuals, the Composting Council Research & Education Foundation was able to raise over $50,000 at COMPOST2020.  These funds will be used for new specific research projects.  The first on the list is Return on Investment (ROI) Analysis of Applying Compost to Aid Product Marketing.  This project will educate the market on the economic benefits of applying compost.  If funding allows, the next project will be Best Management Practices (BMP) for Compost Production, although CCREF expects additional funding will be required for it.

The CCREF Trustees and staff would like to express how grateful they are to everyone who donated to the Foundation and these new research projects.

International Compost Awareness Week is celebrating a major milestone this year – its 25th Anniversary. ICAW was started in Canada in 1995 by the Compost Council of Canada, ICAW has continued to grow as more individuals, businesses, municipalities, schools and organizations hold events and activities throughout their states and communities during the first full week of May. At COMPOST2020, sponsors, volunteers, committee members and others celebrated with cupcakes as a thank-you for supporting this program.
