From the Top of the Pile
The US Composting Council is thrilled to announce that it’s entered a working partnership with the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). Founded in 1899, ASLA is the professional association for landscape architects in the United States, representing more than 15,000 members.
This official agreement is the result of hard work and action items put into motion by USCC's Market Development Committee and is in step with its mission to increase and broaden the markets for compost and the Seal of Testing Assurance program. The partnership will provide opportunities for USCC to engage directly with ASLA’s membership, state chapters, committees and professional practice networks on shared initiatives and educational opportunities to provide expertise on compost utilization on the landscape.
USCC NEWS
USCC has been working to support Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility (DEIA) in the compost industry in various ways over the past two years. We support diverse communities, including BIPOC (Black, indigenous and people of color) and LGBTQ communities. We take these commitments seriously in all of our programs, including our annual conference.
Daytona, Florida, was preselected as the location for our East Coast rotation of the USCC’s Annual Conference several years ago, before current state policies were put in place. We are currently working on preselecting a state for our 2027 conference. We are maximizing our efforts to ensure that these state policy changes are not harmful to our BIPOC and LGBTQ attendees. With regard to our 2024 conference, USCC staff and the DEIA committee are actively working with the Daytona Beach Convention Center and Volusia County officials to provide an as-safe-as-possible environment.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently unveiled a comprehensive toolkit aimed at assisting states, territories, local governments, tribes and nongovernmental organizations in launching effective composting campaigns within their communities.
The EPA's toolkit serves as a valuable guide for organizations and municipalities looking to promote composting initiatives and reduce the amount of organic waste that ends up in landfills. One of the key resources highlighted in the EPA's toolkit is the U.S. Composting Council's (USCC) Target Organics Hub. The Target Organics Hub offers a wealth of information and tools that can help stakeholders implement successful composting campaigns. From case studies and best practices to educational materials and outreach resources, the Target Organics Hub provides a centralized platform for sharing knowledge and fostering collaboration.
For more information and to access the toolkit, visit the EPA's website at https://www.epa.gov/sustainable-management-food/forms/composting-food-scraps-your-community-social-marketing-toolkit

“I am William Dickey, 27 years old and currently working as the Onsite Operations Supervisor for CompostNow Atlanta. I was born and raised in the Atlanta area and currently pursuing a degree in environmental economics and management from the College of Agriculture at the University of Georgia. I’ve worked in composting for about 5 years — 4 1/2 with CompostNow doing just about every operational position possible and a half a year before that mixing compost for a landscaping company.
I chose to pursue a professional credential through the USCC because I know how much potential the composting business has. I knew it would be good to get a certification to prove that I know my stuff. Apart from that, I love everything that the USCC is doing to help professionalize and standardize the composting industry.”
ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC POLICY BRIEFS
USCC members in states where we are targeting senators who can influence upcoming PFAS legislation have responded wonderfully by quickly sending letters asking for consideration for exemption from CERCLA legislation to be added to a Senate bill in draft that is targeting research, reporting and mitigation of PFAS. Members have asked Sen. Alex Padilla (CA), Sen. John Fetterman (PA), Sen. Debbie Stabenow (MI), Sen. Mark Kelly (AZ) and Sen. Tom Carper (DE) to consider the fate of compost facilities if we are included as potential liable parties for cleanup costs. Although some have claimed we need not worry because US EPA will use “discretionary authority” to choose not to prosecute compost manufacturers where PFAS is found near facilities or in product, it doesn’t codify it in law.
USCC members have also brought us success with Zoom legislative meetings held with key senators and congresspersons.
We met in May and June with staff from Missouri, Rep. Mike Alford and Rep. Luetkemeyer, through the efforts of member Steve Callis. USCC attended a Zoom meeting arranged by Tennessee member (and newly elected TNCC president) Wayne Koeckeritz with Rep. Tim Burchett (TN). Brian Pugh and Peter Nierengarten of the City of Fayette, AR, set up a meeting with staff of Sen. John Boozman at which the senator himself appeared on the Zoom screen for the meeting. Lastly, Isaac Bearg set up a meeting with staff of Sen. Frank Pallone of New Jersey.
All of these meetings were to press for cosponsors of the COMPOST Act and the Recycling and Composting Accountability Act (RCAA), and for the RCAA, the specific ask was for Rep. Boozman to be the Republican cosponsor — which he did a few weeks later! We also spoke to all about our PFAS requests (see article above).
USCC has been looking for members willing to host tours of their facility in August, when Congress is out of session. USCC's lobbying efforts have indicated that getting legislators at both the federal and state level OUT TO SEE COMPOST FACILITIES will increase our success with passing legislation considerably!
Efforts are underway in Maryland, Missouri, Texas and Pennsylvania so far. If you want to be part of this effort, check out this link.

COMPOST USE
The demand for medium and coarse-grade compost is increasing in the state of California; much of this is in response to Caltrans and other environmental application requirements. Traditional markets for medium-grade compost, such as landscape mulch and erosion/sediment control media, have significantly expanded, as have emerging markets such as bioretention "low-float" mulch. Further, the desire to obtain less combustible mulches may also expand application for medium-grade composts. That’s where California composters come in, as demand is far outstripping supply. The US Composting Council would like to invite you to join us for a webinar and panel discussion featuring Ron Alexander, R.Alexander Associates Inc; Scott Dowlan, Caltrans; and Ken Murray, Caltrans. Our panelists will discuss best practices in producing a medium/coarse-compost product, as well as growing markets, specifications. success stories, current usage and growing demand within Caltrans.

We are thrilled to highlight Jana Pearce as our YP of the Month! Jana serves as the Business Manager at BPI and is also the Chair of the USCC YP Volunteer Committee.
Let's learn more about Jana's background in the compost world and her involvement with the YP Group and the USCC:
Background in the Compost World:
Jana's passion for composting began in her environmentally conscious household, where turning the compost pile was part of her chores. As an adult, she continued her commitment to home composting, even going as far as training her roommates and advocating for her home-composting setup with her HOA. Her career in environmental education led her to a small nature center, where she developed exhibits on consumer science, aiming to educate children about the product life cycle and the impact of their consumer choices. It was during this time that Jana realized her deep passion for sustainability and the composting industry. Through her research, she discovered BPI and found a perfect match for her passion and career goals. She is proud to support BPI's efforts to create better options for consumers, foster collaboration across the value chain and divert organic waste from landfills in partnership with composter organizations.
