Just in Time Training for I-64 Phase II

On September 13th, VDOT’s Virginia Transportation Research Council and the Hampton Roads District teamed up to hold a Just In Time training class for the I-64 Phase II project. The Phase II project awarded to Allan Myers includes two pavement recycling methods.  First, a portion of the roadway base will be constructed of a full-depth reclamation section. The existing concrete pavement will be removed and the underlying pavement base will be recycled in place. Second, the new pavement base layer will be comprised of a cold central planted recycled asphalt material. This same type of material was used on I-81 Staunton District, I-85 shoulders Richmond District, and test sections at NCAT on the test track and US 280.

The Just In Time training, provided by Dr. Brian Diefenderfer, P.E. of VTRC, focused on getting VDOT, Consultant and Contractor personnel on the same page. The training covered the construction techniques, inspections methods and acceptance procedures at an introductory level.  One or two more detailed training sessions are planned for 2017.  Some of the information used in these training sessions is being incorporated into the new VECAT FDR and Cold Plant Asphalt Recycle classes due to be finalized and delivered in the Summer of 2017.
