New VDOT Flagger Training Video and Revised Training Materials

Print this Article | Send to Colleague

VDOT has developed a new Flagger Training video and has revised the Flagger Training Materials. The new video can be found on YouTube: VDOT: Flagger Training. The video replaces the flagger certification training video which was produced by VDOT in 2007. Revised Flagger Training material based on the new video is available from ATSSA, use this Order Form. The revised training material replaces the 2009 training material. VDOT encourages you to view the new Flagger Training video so you can apply its information in the field. When your current Flagger Certification expires, the new material shall be used to become re-certified in flagging.

A certified flagger may proctor the Flagger Training for their company. A flagger candidate must watch the training video, review the Flagger Training material and successfully pass the test. Inquiries in becoming a certified flagger for your company can be e-mailed to TEWorkZoneSafety@vdot.virginia.gov.

Please replace any flagger training material you may have with the new Flagger Training material that is available through ATSSA in the VDOT Flagger Certification Kit. The Flagger certification cards have not been revised so any you may have can continue to be used. Additional cards must be ordered through ATSSA. This is a new order form for purchasing work zone safety material. The cost of the 2011 WAPM, 2015 Pocket Guide, and VDOT Flagger Certification Kit has increased recently with the new contract renewal.

Although we show a flagger wearing Type E pants along with the ANSI Class 3 top garment throughout the training video, the Type E pants are not a requirement unless flagging at night (30 minutes before sunset to 30 minutes after sunrise). We are, however, recommending to OUR VDOT employees to wear the Type E pants during both day and night to increase the visibility of the flag person to approaching motorist.

If you have any questions with the new training video of the Flagger Certification program, please contact Ginger Quinn at TEWorkZoneSafety@vdot.virginia.gov or 804-786-5959.

Complete details of the Department's flagger training program are available on VDOT's website at http://www.virginiadot.org/business/trafficeng-WZS.asp.
