August 31, 1942 August 18, 2017 Samuel Reed Carter III, 74, of Salem, Va., passed away Friday, August 18, 2017, surrounded by family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Reed Carter II, and Emma Hurt Carter; his daughter, Susan Ashley Carter; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lonnie and Doris Sawyer. Born August 31, 1942, in Roanoke, Sam spent most of his life in Salem. Sam graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering from Virginia Tech (Class of '64), and although he worked other jobs, his professional pride was the 45 years he spent growing L.H. Sawyer Paving Company with his beloved father-in-law, Lonnie. He was an active leader in the community and a proud member and past president of the Salem Rotary Club and the West End Center. As a man of great faith, he served on many committees over the years at First United Methodist Church. He gave his time and talents to the Salem Choral Society and the Salem Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir. He also served on the City of Salem Planning Commission. A die-hard sports fan, Sam loved watching the Hokies play and he loved to play golf, but was the happiest when spending time with his adoring family and many friends. Left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife of 40 years, Lonna; son and daughter-in-law, Samuel Reed Carter, IV and Susan; daughter and son-in-law Emily and Mark Miskovic, and daughter and son-in-law Kelly and Adam College. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Emma Rebekah Carter, Sawyer Elizabeth Carter, Samuel Reed Carter V., and James Emmett Carter, who all adored their Poppy, and they were the light of his life. Those who knew him, knew him for his kind heart, lively sense of humor, endless positivity and joy of life. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to those who took care of him in his final days, including the nursing staff of the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital 9 South Intensive Care Unit, Dr. Robert Moylan, Dr. Paul Richards, Dr. Stephen Vivian, and Ken Anderson, P.A.
