While the Commonwealth of Virginia has typically focused its attention on the annual cost of college tuition and mandatory fees, a study conducted by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia in 2017 shows that students and parents are equally, if not more, concerned about the total cost of college in general. An in-state undergraduate student attending a 4-year public comprehensive college paid approximately $11,000 in the 2016- 2017 school year, while a student attending a public 2-year program paid approximately $5,000. The RJS Scholarship fund was established for the purpose of assisting VAA members or their dependents in furthering their education beyond high school and to help offset these very costs.
As of January 1, applications for 2018 scholarship awards are now being accepted. Candidates who are eligible to apply include: incoming freshman (fall semester of 2018), first-year attendees at post-high school institution (i.e., trade school, colleges, universities) or students currently enrolled in post-high school institutions. Past applicants or scholarship award winners are also encouraged to apply again. Thanks to member support of this program, as well as several successful charity events that benefit the fund, VAA hopes to to award up to nine $5,000 scholarships in 2018 — a good start toward the growing cost of higher education.
We need your help in locating candidates who are eligible and might be interested in securing some extra funds to put toward educational expenses. Applications are available on the VAA website under Schreck Scholarship and can be completed online or mailed to the VAA office. Please act quickly! The deadline for receipt of applications is March 1 and winners will be announced in early April. If you or someone you know has questions about this program that are not addressed on the website, please contact Carter Iseman, VAA Director of Training and Development, at (804) 288-3169 or at ciseman@vaasphalt.com.
