With the successful use on parking lots, transportation owners and agencies are looking to expand the use of porous asphalt materials to roadways. The FHWA has a research project looking to expand the use of porous graded asphalt on highway surfaces. NCAT has a project (NCHRP 01-55) to develop a performance-based mix design method for porous friction courses. For several years, cities across the US have used porous asphalt streets and roads to control storm water run-off and improve water quality. Recognizing the need for a standard design approach, the asphalt pavement industry initiated a project to develop a structural design methodology for low-volume roadway pavement structures. This project will result in a design methodology that can be used across the country and will be incorporated into PaveXpress. This project is expected to be completed in the Summer of 2017. More updates on the project and future training on the design approach using PaveXpress will be provided by VAA.
