Under this promotion, companies that join the Association between now and September 30th will pay 2017 annual membership dues, and your membership will begin immediately. In effect, you receive up to 15 months of membership for the price of 12.

Come One, Come All!
Join us for the VAA Asphalt Classic Golf Tournament and help the Scholarship Program support students. This year's tournament is open to everyone who wants to play and will be held at The Club at Viniterra on October 5, 2016.
Proceeds from the golf tournament will benefit the VAA Academic Scholarship. The VAA Scholarship Committee hopes to raise enough donations through personal and corporate giving along with the Asphalt Classic tournament to award 5 scholarships. Each scholarship will be for $5,000 and at least one scholarship will be awarded to a student attending a community college or trade school.

In less than two weeks, the VAA Fall Asphalt Conference & Expo will be held on October 3-5 at the Richmond Marriott Downtown. This year’s conference has an added feature – an expo hall. Over 50 exhibitors from around the Commonwealth and the US will be displaying equipment and services related to the asphalt industry.

Recently, Virginia went from one member to three members on the National Asphalt Pavement Association’s Executive Committee. For several years, Mr. Ron White, Chairman Emeritus of Superior Paving Corp and past NAPA Chairman, has served on the Executive Committee. Now, Virginia has two more familiar faces serving. Mr. Mark Schiller – Senior Vice President - Lane Plants of Virginia Paving Company, and Mr. James Mitchell, President of Superior Paving Corp., have been added to the Executive Committee. Please take time and congratulate Mark and Jim on their appointments.

Meet Dave Laraway, the VECAT Coordinator who manages the large quantities of work required behind-the-scenes to keep the VECAT program running smoothly. Based at Germanna’s Culpeper campus, Dave stays busy helping to coordinate online classes, schedule tests for students at VCCS test centers, maintaining course progress reports and enrollment statistics, maintaining certification records, proctoring exams, implementing ongoing program deliverables and working with both companies and students through phone, email and screen casts to help them acclimate to the program.

1. Citizen Boards.
The State Water Control Board will hold its next meeting on September 22-23. There are three primary items on the agenda.
• The Board will consider the reissuance of Dominion’s Chesterfield Power Station VPDES permit. This permit will permit the dewatering of the facility’s coal ash ponds prior to pond closure.

On September 13th, VDOT’s Virginia Transportation Research Council and the Hampton Roads District teamed up to hold a Just In Time training class for the I-64 Phase II project. The Phase II project awarded to Allan Myers includes two pavement recycling methods.

During the week of September 12th, S.L. Williamson Company of Charlottesville completed the FHWA High-Density Demonstration Project. VDOT was one of 10 state transportation agencies to be awarded a FHWA grant to perform the project. The focus of the project was to achieve higher in-place density or lower in-place air voids. Through better and more uniform density, pavement life should be extended by reducing the intrusion of water and air into the pavement layers.
