Commonly used for parking lots and other light-duty applications, full-depth porous asphalt pavements are increasingly being used on roadways as part of efforts to mitigate flooding hazards, reduce hardscape, and improve sustainability. To help ensure these new porous asphalt roadways provide reliable performance under traffic, NAPA has published Structural Design Guidelines for Porous Asphalt Pavements.
Written by Charles W. Schwartz, Ph.D., and Kevin D. Hall, Ph.D., P.E., with the support of the NAPA–SAPA Pavement Economics Committee's Pavement Design Task Group, Structural Design Guidelines for Porous Asphalt Pavements discusses the structural design procedure for porous asphalt and the required inputs using the AASHTO 93 design method.

Insider Report
Members, Join VAA as We Host an Informal Session with Garrett Moore, Mohammad Mirshahi and District Engineers
VDOT is the single largest customer for the asphalt industry. More than five million tons of mix per year is provided for use on VDOT projects or to VDOT directly. Beyond this tonnage, VDOT specifications and guidelines impact most of the non-VDOT tonnage produced in the state. Since VDOT has such a big impact, both directly and indirectly, it is important that companies understand what VDOT wants and VDOT understands what companies can provide. Through formal and informal meetings, this exchange of information can strengthen the partnership between each entity. Seating is limited for this event, so register early.
Following the Discussion with the Department, on October 11, 2018, the Richmond region will host the last RJ Schreck Scholarship Tournament of the season at Birkdale Golf Club. Why not register for both events and strengthen partnerships in and out of the office? Complete information and registration available on the VAA website.

Spotlight on VECAT
There is no right or wrong answer when an individual contemplates attending a trade school versus a 4-year college or university. The "right" decision is based on a multitude of factors that differ for each person, including individual interest, long-term goals, timing, family obligations, finances and a whole host of other reasons why one direction may be better than the other. The point of our summer series on considering trade schools vs. college is not to oppose the four-year degree, but to remind individuals not to overlook the trade school option when deciding on their post-high-school path.
