We Have to Wake Congress UP
Congress has still not come together to answer the calls of apartment residents and the apartment industry by providing comprehensive rent relief for the multitudes that are suffering financially as a result of COVID-19. Again and again, both parties seem willing to throw out the concept for a cheap political advance one day just to reel it back the next. We need real action. Join VAMA and NAA in urging our federal representatives to pass comprehensive rent relief right now. Now is our time to make some noise. CLICK HERE TO TAKE ACTION.
The RMRP is Making Some Big Changes
There are exciting changes coming as time runs out for CARES Act money to be spent. These funds, which power the Rent and Mortgage Relief Program (RMRP) need to be committed by December 31, 2020. Thus, Virginia’s Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) has now set a deadline for applications to be in.
The last day for all RMRP grantees to accept applications is close of business day on Sunday, November 15. With the November 15 cut-off date in mind, RMRP grantees will now be able to pay eligible rent and mortgage expenses forward, through December 31, 2020.
There is one key qualifier. In order to apply for forward-looking rent, tenants' leases must go through December 31, 2020. If an eligible applicant has a lease ending before then, rent can only be paid through the final day of their lease.
