In January 2021, VAMA was thrilled to partner with a local Virginia Community College to offer an important industry certification. New River Community College (NRCC) began offering the 80-hour Certificate for Apartment Maintenance Technician (CAMT) credential course this year.
79.2% of households made a full or partial rent payment by February 6, 2021, according to the latest data from the National Multifamily Housing Council. This is 1.9% less than the percentage that paid by February 6, 2020, and 2.6% more than the percentage that paid by January 6, 2021.

The four communities are Meridian Watermark (Richmond), Impressions (Newport News), Denbigh Village (Newport News) and Marina Villa (Norfolk), and were purchased by CAPREIT.
Riverbend Apartments, a 218-unit community off Route 17 in Gloucester, is now open. The Earthcraft Gold certified community boasts a luxury clubhouse, fitness center, playground, resort-style pool and grilling area.
The 65 units, to be located on the same property as Jefferson House, will be for residents aged 55 and older who are homeless or making 60% or less than the median income.
The 310-unit community would be comprised of six buildings and a plethora of amenities. Rents will be market rate, likely starting at $1200 per month for a one-bedroom.
The proposed six-story building would break ground later this year with a completion date in the spring of 2023. Most of the units will be one-bedrooms with a separate study or office area.
Holly Springs Apartments and Swansboro Apartments are scheduled to receive major upgrades this year, with South Gate Apartments scheduled for rehab in 2022. Upgrades will include new heating, air, plumbing, electrical systems, and renovated kitchens with new appliances, to total roughly $74,000 per unit.
The community, which was started in November 2019, finished ahead of schedule. In addition to 51 apartments, the community features a salon, library, dog park and more.
Local management company was successful in getting a piece of land rezoned in an often forgotten about section of Virginia Beach. The property will become home to 220 affordable apartment homes.
