The Hampton Roads chapter of the Virginia Apartment Management Association hosted the Apartment Community Excellence (ACE) Awards on the evening of October 6, 2023 at the Hilton Norfolk The Main. The 11th annual event had record-breaking attendance of 1,050 multifamily rental housing professionals, eager to celebrate individual and apartment community accomplishments. This year’s judging, conducted virtually by submission review and interviews, determined the following to be leaders in apartment management in the Hampton Roads market.

The Sandra Winfrey Advocacy Scholarship, generously established by the Winfrey family with a donation of $4,500 to the Virginia Apartment Management Association, aims to foster the development of new apartment industry advocates. The scholarship is designed to support one outstanding individual in their pursuit of advocacy by funding their attendance at three key events: VAMA's 2024 Lobby Day in Richmond, NAA's 2024 Advocate Conference in Washington, DC, and the 2024 Virginia Governor's Housing Conference in Virginia Beach.
The Hampton Roads chapter of our organization showcased community spirit and commitment last month, as members and volunteers came together for the Welcome Home Basket drop-off event. This initiative was organized for the second year in a row to support the efforts of Moms on a Mission, an organization deeply devoted to aiding those in southeast VA who are either currently experiencing homelessness or transitioning to permanent housing after such a challenging phase in their lives.

The VAMA | Hampton Roads annual Fall Workshop is coming up on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, in Newport News. This year's sessions are led by industry speakers Stephanie Anderson, who brings a vast background in property management and communications, and Dana Duckworth, podcast host and DEI advocate with extensive experience in multifmily housing and the tech sector. The morning session, "Building Bridges," delves into creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace, emphasizing recruitment, internal biases, and fostering a sustainable inclusive culture. The afternoon session, "Navigating the New Horizons," explores innovative approaches to talent recruitment and retention in the evolving work landscape. This will be the last chance of 2023 for members to earn in-person CECs in Hampton Roads for their credential renewal!

The Lawson Companies just closed a land deal that will make way for a community of income-based apartments, reserved for renters earning less than sixty percent of AMI. Named The View At Belle Isle, the 116 units will range from studios to two-bedrooms, and amenities will include a clubroom, fitness center, onsite bus stop and more.

Bonaventure celebrated the grand opening of Attain at Harbour View, a luxury 300-unit community in the Wynnewood neighborhood of Suffolk. The community boasts Class A amenities like a resort-style swimming pool, fitness center with kids' fitness and play area, a theater room and more.
