Beginning in 2024, VAMA undertook a strategic initiative aimed at bolstering its presence and influence within the Virginia General Assembly. The initiative saw an impressive turnout of 18 dedicated members from across Virginia actively engaging in rental housing policy discussions. These discussions involved interactions with 26 legislators and their aides, spanning both chambers of the General Assembly.

Breeden Construction is pleased to announce the completion the luxury multifamily community Altoview Apartments in Charlottesville, Virginia. This project was completed for the developers Castle Development, while Breeden Construction served as the general contractor for the project.

City Council has approved a rezoning request for Asburn Meadows, a 132-acre development with 398 townhomes and cottages, and 6 acres of commercial space.

Maryland-based TM Associates has announced plans to develop two affordable rental communities, each with 31 units, in downtown Newport News. Construction of the combined $30 million projects is expected to begin around Labor Day this year.

The Jefferson Hotel in Old Towne Petersburg, originally built in 1918 and vacant for decades, is being reimagined into a mixed-use development including 24 apartments, a coffee shop and a wine bar. The apartments, mostly one-bedrooms, range from 300-900 square feet. The $2 million project is expected to be complete this summer.

Virginia Supportive Housing is partnering with the Northside Campus of Richmond Behavioral Health Authority, which is donating a 1.7 acre plot from its campus, for the building of 82 rental units for individuals coming out of homelessness. Rents will be income-based, with residents paying no more than 30% of their income.

The plans were filed by D.C.-based Audeo Partners for the 1.7-acre parking lot, formerly owned by Dominion Energy. The two proposed buildings would include 173 one-bedroom and 48 two-bedroom apartments. The company previously purchased an office building that they have already begun converting into 125 apartments on the same street as the proposed new communities.
