Brown Edwards is pleased to announce the acquisition of the Newport News practice of Dixon Hughes Goodman effective October 31, 2018. DHG Partners Hugh Barlow and Leslie Roberts along with most of the staff located in Newport News will become part of the Brown Edwards team and a significant number of DHG’s clients are expected to transition to Brown Edwards.

Delta Dental of Virginia in Roanoke announced that Kristin Merlo joined the company as senior vice president and chief operating officer. Merlo is replacing Dyke Davies, who is retiring at the end of the year after more than 20 years. Provided by: Virginia Business
Luck Stone has expanded its footprint in the Southeastern U.S. through two new acquisitions. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Luck Stone is the Goochland County-based crushed stone division of Luck Cos. The company purchased Stephens Industries in Atlanta and Willow Oak Quarry in Kershaw County, S.C. Jason Campbell of Albemarle Hearing and Cooling in Charlottesville passed away on November 2nd. He is survived by his wife, 2 children, his parents, extended family and lifelong friends.

In 1984, John R. Lawson II spotted a distinctive piece of mail at the office. He knew that the onion-skin envelope — used at that time to reduce the cost of air mail — contained a British company’s letter of intent to buy Newport News-based W.M. Jordan Co., the construction firm Lawson’s father, Robert, and William Jordan founded in 1958. The purchase price already had been set, and employees had been informed of the pending deal.
Will Karbach, CEO of The Branch Group, is pleased to announce the appointment of Ernie Caldwell as a member of Governor Ralph Northam’s Build Virginia Advisory Board. Ernie is the President of G. J. Hopkins, Inc., a mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC service contractor headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia and a subsidiary of The Branch Group. Under Ernie’s leadership, G. J. Hopkins has developed an apprenticeship program that has grown from an average of six apprentices in 2014 to thirty-one in 2018.
In June of 2018, Governor Northam announced the launch of Build Virginia, an initiative that will connect workers throughout the Commonwealth with training and employment opportunities in the skilled trades—a lifeline for G. J. Hopkins. Build Virginia brings together information about industry-recognized training programs, registered apprenticeships, and other relevant workforce development resources. Ultimately, it will serve as a comprehensive hub for citizens across the Commonwealth to learn about the skilled trades and connect with employers seeking talent.
The Associated General Contractors of Virginia is pleased to announce the appointment of Courtney Baker as a member of Governor Ralph Northam’s Build Virginia Advisory Board. Courtney joined the AGCVA staff in April of 2017 to manage Training and Workforce Solutions programs.
In June of 2018, Governor Northam announced the launch of Build Virginia, a platform to connect Virginia residents with training and employment opportunities in the skilled trades. Build Virginia will bring together information about industry-recognized training programs, registered apprenticeships, and other relevant workforce development resources.
This Advisory Board will be comprised of a competent and diverse group of industry-leaders in the various skilled trades, who will have the opportunity to help the Commonwealth raise awareness about lucrative opportunities in the skilled trades, highlight affordable ways to gain in-demand skills, and meet the current and future hiring needs of Virginia’s employers.
