Industry News
As we enter the final month of 2019, I see a very different 2020 for the Construction Industry. Business demand appears to continue down the strong side for the near future. However, the political landscape has changed quite a bit and it will impact your business – how much will depend on what you are willing to do in the next 90 days.
There are a lot of new faces in the Legislature for 2020 and the fact the Virginia Legislature has turned from Republican to Democrat is important, but not nearly as important as the fact so few members in the Legislature have just more than 10 years’ experience on core issues related to commercial construction. Over the next 90 days our membership needs to compete with every other organization in getting our message to these newer and newly elected officials on issues important to commercial construction. Our plan is simple and important. We have three core areas we want to focus:
1. Workforce Shortages
2. Statue of Limitations
3. Public Procurement

Early Bird Rate Ends December 20th. In September the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation began sending digital licenses to all regulated professionals, making DPOR licenses more accessible and portable. Licenses are still issued and used in the same way, but now are accessible with a few taps on a phone or web browser. DPOR’s digital licensing is powered by Merit, a service that offers organizations like DPOR a single, secure platform to verify personal and professional qualifications, versus relying on analog siloed systems of paper certificates, ledgers, and plastic ID cards.
In addition to helping organizations securely issue and manage digital credentials, Merit lets private training providers issue merits as well. This means individuals’ continuing education units can be visible right next to professional licenses within Merit, creating a single destination to access, track, and organize individuals’ achievements. Merit is also releasing tools to help professionals share their digital credentials to whoever they would like, either at points of sale to secure industry discounts, or with end customers to verify licenses.
AGC & Sage are conducting a survey on 2020 Construction Industry Hiring and Business Outlook. We encourage members to complete the following survey. AGC and Sage will be working with chief economist, Ken Simonson, to prepare an analysis of the results which will be released to the media and members. It is expected to produce state-specific Outlook results for those states with a large enough survey sample size. Take 5 minutes ... Help represent the state of Virginia. Participate in the Survey!
Workforce Development
"One size fits all" doesn't work.
The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) is partnering with construction technology provider Autodesk to launch a one-time grant program that addresses the need for better-fitting personal protective equipment (PPE) for women who work at heights. The state board that oversees community colleges will explore what on-campus or nearby student housing could look like at the system’s 23 schools. “Northern Virginia is missing out in thousands, potentially millions, from international students,” said Chancellor Glenn DuBois.
Members of the Virginia Community College System State Board unanimously voted to allow the facilities department to issue a request for statements of interest and qualifications from companies that could design, build and manage student housing. Safety
A way to introduce Lean Construction concepts to the job-site. These 10-minute conversational huddles will help your team identify ways to improve processes, eliminate waste and adopt a Lean culture in the shop and field. Each Toolbox Talk session, released monthly, reviews a concept you can use to create discussion, teach and grow your team’s understanding of Lean and determine how you can work more productively and collaboratively . Review the slide deck in an office or on a site, use the lesson to explain the concept, discuss the concept and use the printable handout to pass out to your team as a tool to help implement positive change.
