About three years ago, I became active in the AGC of Virginia. I was unsure what the benefit would be because my prior firm was a member, but not particularly active, so I did not see a real benefit to membership while there. However, all that has changed.
Since I began actively participating in the meetings, presenting at functions and participating in everything from Sporting Clay shoots to membership committee meetings, I have gained a great deal. On a personal level, the friendships are great. I realized why I like to represent construction professionals. This is a good group of people that I find easy to want to help out.

On October 23, 2017, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) began full enforcement of its respirable crystalline silica standard for construction. If your construction company operates under OSHA state-plans in one of 26 states or two territories, it is important that you check to see if your OSHA state-plan agency is following the federal OSHA’s lead with this enforcement policy.

"Communication takes many forms which we've all been educated in...mostly...right? From a young age we are taught how to read properly to understand the world around us. We are taught how to write effectively so we can communicate our thoughts, too. But how many of us have ever been given any training on how to effectively listen?

It may be the construction industry’s worst-kept secret: There aren’t enough Virginia Tech Myers-Lawson School of Construction graduates to satisfy hiring demand.
Myers-Lawson students enjoy 100 percent employment, their pick of construction management jobs with top national and global construction firms, and average starting salaries of at least $66,000-a-year – before they leave Virginia Tech.

• According to management and investment banking firm FMI's latest talent development report, many firms in the engineering and construction industries do not invest in workforce development.
• Those that do devote resources into robust development cultures, however, tend to have the highest employee retention, the report found.
• Of those FMI surveyed, 89% reported worker shortages and 43% don't have a formal workforce development budget. Nearly 60% said their training, development and performance management efforts were not very effective, while 55% reported that they did not have any official system for identifying and developing employees with high potential.

Many in the construction and manufacturing industries are finding drones and UAVs can play a vital role in their work. Whether they're used for surveying, to monitor job sites to ensure safe practices, assisting in quality assurance assignments, real-time inventory or asset tracking, drones are rapidly changing the way that companies do business. The biggest hurdle facing those interested in exploring this technology is the question of legality.
