Sharon Rheinhart, an At-Large Board Member of AGCVA, recently accepted a position with DPR Construction. She was previously the Director of Supplier Diversity & Inclusion with W. M. Jordan Company where she spent the last 17 years. As of April 29th she is the Social Responsibility Manager for DPR’s Northeast Region (which includes Virginia).
Social Responsibility is a pretty broad term, but to have someone in this role, shows DPR’s commitment to improve the communities in which they build. Sharon said her focus is: “The DPR Point of View” which is “Respect for the individual” and “Change the world”. She strives to stay true to DPR’s 4 Core Values: Integrity, Enjoyment, Uniqueness and Ever Forward and said that along with her colleagues, she will continue community involvement, increase D & I efforts (diversity and inclusion) and always aim to make positive impact. Sharon said: “We all need to be more intentional about making a positive difference.”

The Marketing Coordinator’s primary function is to assist and support the Vice President in providing the information necessary to be successful with Business Development and Marketing initiatives as well as Corporate Public Relations. This position will also assist the Executive Vice President and the Preconstruction Services Group with support documents as necessary to respond to proposals.

Virginia’s construction and manufacturing companies have a desperate need for workers, but are struggling to find the skilled employees they require.
“There is a mismatch between skills and available jobs,” said Tracey Sloan, a program manager for the Virginia Department of Transportation and a member of the Build Virginia advisory board.
Build Virginia is an initiative of Gov. Ralph Northam. Introduced in June last year, it seeks to connect workers throughout the state with training and employment opportunities in the skilled trades, with a focus on shipbuilding, construction and advanced manufacturing.
“Jobs of the future are neither blue collar nor white collar but new collar,” Northam said in a press release about the initiative.

Americans owe more than $1.5 trillion in student debt, that's according to the Federal Reserve. The Roanoke County Public Schools Apprenticeship Program is taking on that problem head-on. Nineteen RCPS high school students made one-year commitments to one of eight area businesses, with wages starting at eleven bucks an hour.

This March, the Peninsula District raised funds at their Annual Casino Night/Silent Auction for New Horizons to support programs like the “Good Life Solution” which transitions students to employment in the Automotive, Construction and Manufacturing industries. Pat Walsh of Walsh Electric presented Casey Roberts, Executive Director for New Horizons a check for $6,000 at their Signing Day.

The AGCVA Valley District recently awarded $3,000 in scholarships to four area students. The Valley District is thrilled to be a part of the future successes of these students and look forward to the possibility of having them working alongside our members, in the future. Congratulations Brandon Dean Landes, Emma Grace Gallagher, Davis Cogar, and Evan Lam!

The VA BEST review board looked at several applications and approved Southern Air Inc. out of the Central District to VA BEST – Level 1.  Level 1 is the first level toward level three.  Paul Denham, President of Southern Air, said; “This process has made our company stronger. I can only hope that together, we will influence the industry and encourage other companies to follow this same path. Only together can we really impact safety in our industry.”

Teaching Project Managers the essential skills to ensure project success.
The Project Manager Development Program (PMDP) is for early-career project managers or those looking to move into such a role. It is a five-course program that covers the essentials of project management and provides a solid foundation for long-term career development. Each unit is around 16 hours of content, making the 5 course program around 80 hours of instruction. The curriculum is offered at many of AGC's chapters nationwide or can be brought in-house to construction firms and educational institutions.
