Brown Edwards Acquires Cherry Bekaert’s Roanoke and Lynchburg Practices

Brown Edwards is pleased to announce the acquisition of the Roanoke and Lynchburg practices of Cherry Bekaert, LLP effective June 1, 2019. Cherry Bekaert Partners Randy Burton and Richard Hedley in Roanoke will be joining Brown Edwards, as will most of the staff located in both offices. A significant number of Cherry Bekaert’s clients are expected to transition to Brown Edwards as well.

In less than 3 weeks the building community came together with enormous support to pay tribute to friends and families affected by the May 31st Tragedy. Over 400 people attended the BUILD STRONG #VBSTRONG fundraiser and helped raise over $60,000. This event will be a yearly event to help those effected by this tragedy.

Administration Unveils Apprenticeship Proposal

Fails to Address Growing Construction Industry Skills Shortage

On June 25, the U.S. Employment and Training Administration issued a notice of proposed rulemaking to establish a process for recognizing Industry-Recognized Apprenticeship Programs (IRAPs) that would operate in parallel with the existing registered apprenticeship system. However, the construction industry would not “initially” be eligible to participate in this proposed IRAP process. In a statement, AGC CEO Stephen E. Sandherr noted that “[a]t a time when the vast majority of construction firms report having a hard time finding qualified workers to hire, it is deeply troubling that the Trump administration has opted to not include the sector in its new apprenticeship proposal.” For the complete AGC statement, click here. Virginia Tech Will Be Amazon’s Neighbor With Construction Of New $1B ‘Innovation Campus’

Virginia Tech is building its newest campus in the city of Alexandria, Virginia, just south of the planned location of Amazon’s site in Arlington. The facility is expected to offer graduate-level courses in cybersecurity, quantum computing, artificial intelligence and other forward-looking technologies that have become growing focal points for regional employers, particularly government contractors. But observers also say Virginia Tech’s enhanced presence in the region could lure more product-focused tech companies, like those that dominate Silicon Valley.

Workforce forum urges business leaders to help "bring sexy back"

“Bring sexy back.” Those famous Justin Timberlake lyrics were thrown around several times at a forum discussing workforce shortages and talent attraction and retention.

There’s still a labor shortage in Hampton Roads and without diversification in the economy and less dependence on the defense industry, growing companies won’t be able to find adequately talented and skilled employees. That’s according to a new six-month study on workforce shortages and talent alignment released by the Hampton Roads Community Foundation and Hampton Roads Workforce Council. The 2019 Talent Alignment Strategy has three parts: a workforce analysis, supply-demand analysis and talent alignment strategy.

This course covers understanding how project estimates are compiled, how to compare actual project costs with those estimated and how to control costs to meet the estimate. This course also details how productivity is measured, how the supervisor plays a major role in increasing jobsite productivity and how a small increase in productivity can have a significant impact on the time and cost of a project.
