The AGCVA world is buzzing with activity. Our annual convention was only a month ago but AGCVA leaders and staff are charging forward with the pillars of our strategic plan and are already making big strides. AGCVA is advocating – and should be the “first call” for members, legislators, regulators, and other stakeholders on issues related to construction. In support of this, AGCVA staff is working hard to develop a comprehensive PR strategy meant to complement our overall advocacy efforts.

Many are active participants in this decade’s trend of using employee stock ownership plans, or ESOPs, to build employee loyalty and retirement assets while increasing their founders’ wealth transfer options.
ThinkWhy’s LaborIQ hiring study predicts 1 in 4 hires this year will be in four major metros, and outlines the 10 markets where overall job growth as a percentage of population will be highest. Forecasted for 2022, are almost 240,000 jobs gained in Construction and Extraction occupations – 3.9% growth. Labor supply is the one major factor that could hinder job growth in all industries.

Prices of construction materials jumped more than 20% from January 2021 to January 2022, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) of government data. The association recently posted a new edition of its Construction Inflation Alert, a report to inform project owners, officials, and others about the challenges volatile materials costs, supply chain disruptions, and labor shortages posed for construction firms.

DOL's hiring push for wage and hour investigators, along with its promise of "significantly more hiring" to come, signals the agency's focus on employers' violations of wage and hour laws. The move aligns with the Biden administration's interest in workers' rights, including the selection of former union official Marty Walsh as Secretary of Labor and an executive order that required a minimum wage of $15 per hour for federal contractors.
With increased labor shortages, supply chain delays and COVID-19 restrictions, the pandemic has amplified common sources of conflict in construction, like changes in project scope, unforeseen physical conditions and poor project management. However, experts say that the pandemic has also accelerated technological advancements in the industry that can help mitigate them.

The National AGC Safety Awards (NASA) program has been an ongoing effort since 1991, offering AGC members the opportunity to evaluate their safety record and compare it with other AGC members according to member size and construction type. The NASA program also provides a great opportunity to recognize, at a national level, members who have excellent safety records.

Taking advantage of teachable moments and harboring a safe environment to discuss dangers are key to avoiding preventable loss. "If we don't understand why an incident happened, we have no chance of preventing recurrence, and that's really what we're trying to do," said Rob Dahl, risk and safety specialist at CSDZ.
