Meredith Arlington Alvis, of Crozier, died March 9, 2011, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Rosalie Smith Alvis; three children, Teresa Alvis Given and her husband, Jeff, Kevin Lewis Alvis and his wife, Jodi, and Lindsey Alvis Melvin and her husband, Alex, all of Richmond; nine grandchildren, Freddy, Charles, Meredith and Clay Given, Riley, Griffin and Coley Alvis and Frances and Ben Melvin; one brother, Glen Woodson Alvis of Dinwiddie. He was preceded in death by his sister, Emily Dandridge Alvis. He was born June 12, 1935 in Goochland, Virginia.
He operated his own business, selling real estate and insurance in Goochland county for 56 years. He was a member and trustee of Dover Baptist Church and was active in the local community. Despite limited mobility as a result of a lifelong battle with rheumatoid arthritis, he was an avid gardener and loved to work outdoors. He was happiest when riding on his lawn mower or tilling his garden.
