We were exceptionally pleased that that Delegate Buddy Fowler introduced a Joint Resolution to the General Assembly recognizing both IIAV’s 120th anniversary and establishing the first week of March, in 2019 and thereafter, as Trusted Choice Independent Insurance Agents Week. The timing is specifically designed to get our members prepared for Flood Awareness Week and the beginning of hurricane season.
IIAV Member Resources
Associations are looking for opportunities to help their members with health insurance options. Without a doubt there is power and leverage in large numbers. Association Health Plans are a hot topic of conversation, however there are other alternatives as well, such as Multiple Employer Welfare Arrangements “MEWAs,” Multiple Employer Trusts “METs,” franchise plans, and various levels of consortiums. Asset Protection Group is currently working with the VSAE and other VSAE association members to create a special health insurance offering. Please contact me with any questions 804-423-7700 or mdise@apgroupinc.com.

The Perils of Using Internet Explorer as Your Default Browser

When Microsoft released Windows 10 nearly four years ago, it included a new updated and modern browser called Edge. While Internet Explorer lived on due to some underlying code in Windows and for compatibility with legacy business websites, Microsoft no longer provides updates for Internet Explorer when new web standards are released.

Virginia law §63.2-1606 states that an employee, agent, qualified individual or representative of a bank, trust company, savings institution, loan association, consumer finance company, credit union, investment company, investment advisor, securities firm, accounting firm or insurance company, may report suspected financial exploitation to the local department of social services or the APS hotline.

IIAV News

After over 25 years in the insurance industry, Donald Bragg, CPCU, MBA, CIC, CPIA, joins the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia as the director of membership & marketing. Bragg comes to IIAV with experience in both personal lines and commercial lines of insurance, as well as managing agency relationships. Previously with Hanover Insurance Company, an associate member of IIAV, Bragg knows the membership of the organization and in his new role will expand that knowledge and continue to build relationships.
As a business leader in your community and member of IIAV, you can be most helpful in identifying insurance professionals to possibly serve on the IIAV Board of Directors. We are seeking individuals with a proven record of community service and leadership ability and who would have a commitment to preserving the independent insurance agency system on a statewide basis. Of course, if you see this person in the mirror, you are encouraged to nominate yourself.

Selective is partnering with the IIAV to celebrate Trusted Choice Independent Insurance Agents Week with an incentive for every new flood policy written between March 1 and March 31, with Selective Insurance Company. Contact your VA Selective Flood Representative, Annette Winston, today!

With the legislative session now over, I’d like to extend my congratulations to the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia for being formally recognized by the Virginia General Assembly in HJ703, which designates the first week in March as the Trusted Choice Independent Insurance Agents week. Independent agents deserve this recognition for playing such an important role in fostering competitive insurance markets in Virginia and providing consumers with affordable options. Finally, with hurricane season approaching, let me take this opportunity to encourage agents to make customers more aware of their potential need for flood insurance in all areas of Virginia — not just those who live near a river or along the coast.

Political clout in Washington, D.C., is largely measured by political (PAC) fundraising, grassroots strength and relationships with elected officials. The Big “I” has proven itself unparalleled when it comes to representing main street independent insurance agents in these areas.
In January, the Internal Revenue Service issued final regulations concerning a new tax deduction for “qualified business income” under Section 199A of the tax code. The Big “I” lobbied aggressively on this regulation as it is critically important for owners and shareholders of insurance agencies and brokerages organized as pass-through entities, such as partnerships and S-corporations.
Each year, Affinity HR Group produces a semi-annual labor market report to help our member clients prepare and plan for expected workforce trends for the coming year. Click Learn More to find a report for IIAV.
