From the Desk of the President & CEO

As I write this article, the legislature opens tomorrow, January 7. Over 1,200 bills have been dropped, and there are some doozies. Why does the governor want to get rid of vehicle safety inspections if not to divert attention from the proposal to increase the gas tax? I can’t believe the number of health mandates that are being introduced as if individual and small business insurance isn’t expensive enough. Thankfully, it seems like everyone wants to have their name associated with the distracted driving proposal, so we might want to get it passed this year.

The Top 10 TechTips of 2019

I published about 50 TechTips in 2019. I realize that with the continued flood of emails, some of these TechTips may have gotten sent to a “read later” folder and were forgotten. Others may have scanned the issue but didn’t have time to research to see if the tip would help.

I have never promised that every TechTips will be earth-shattering and life-changing. I do hope that there will be a few gems over the course of the year that significantly impact productivity and effectiveness for you individually and for the organization.

In this issue, I am highlighting my top 10 TechTips for 2019, listed in no particular order.

State & National News

The Hill, a prominent political newspaper, has once again named Bob Rusbuldt, Big “I" President & CEO, and Charles Symington, Big “I" Senior Vice President of external, industry and government affairs, among the top trade association lobbyists in Washington, D.C., this year.

As in previous years, the Big “I" was the only insurance agent/broker group to make the list.
In its announcement this morning, The Hill stated the criteria for the recognition. “Not all of those honored on this list are formally registered as lobbyists," the newspaper reported with its list. “But the people below are all at the top of their game — and the ones the nation's biggest companies, labor unions and associations turn to when they want their voices heard in the nation's capital."

“The Big 'I' is proud to have its government affairs team recognized, once again, by one of the premier political newspapers in the country," says Jon Jensen, Big “I" Chairman and President & CEO of Correll Insurance Group in Spartanburg, South Carolina. “We are grateful to Bob Rusbuldt, Charles Symington and the entire government affairs team for the hard work, meaningful relationships and dedication that consistently result in our association being named among the most influential in the country."

Congressional leaders regularly tap the Big “I" Federal Government Affairs team for its political acumen for sitting on congressional steering committees, raising campaign dollars, hosting political events and strategizing to help members of Congress better serve their constituents and advance top issues. A vital component of the association's advocacy efforts is InsurPac, the Big “I" Political Action Committee, which has disbursed approximately $1 million this election cycle to congressional campaigns on both sides of the aisle that are supportive of the independent agency system.

RICHMOND – The State Corporation Commission (SCC) has approved revisions to the premium levels charged for workers' compensation insurance in Virginia. Workers' compensation insurance provides medical care and wage replacement benefits to injured workers. Almost all Virginia employers are required to provide the coverage to their employees.
Over the last week, the Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) issued two separate news bulletins about L&I claim fraud. Without question, people who defraud the workers’ compensation system in Washington State hurt other work injury claimants. It is a very serious matter. Again, anyone who commits any type of fraud relating to a workers’ compensation claim hurts injured workers.

With 2019 over and a new decade dawning, it’s an ideal time to think about bonuses for 2020.

Organizations of all sizes and across all industries use bonus programs as an important component of total compensation. Over 60% of respondents in a 2016 World at Work survey reported using some type of bonus or variable pay program as did 73% of respondents in a more recent 2019 Payscale survey.

Q: We have an account manager who is a great employee but is very harsh with her direct reports.  She’s good at corrective criticism but is not helping her team develop. Do you have any tips?
