A common question following the adjournment of the General Assembly is, "Aren’t you glad it’s over?" And yes, to a certain degree I am glad the session is over but don’t forget the veto session is still scheduled for April 20 and the Governor has already vetoed 12 bills and it’s not the end of March as I write this.

We would like to know your opinion on the adequacy of
funding of your fire department from the state Fire Program Fund.
Virtually every year legislation is introduced to increase
funding for the Fire Program Fund and 2016 was no different with a proposal to
increase the insurance premium tax by $14 million. As you know, the insurance premium tax is
based on homeowners insurance written in the Commonwealth.
Any comments you might have, please send them to Bob
Bradshaw – IIAV’s President & CEO at: rbradshaw@iiav.com

Without question IIAV is the key and virtually sole legislative organization representing insurance agents’ interests at the Virginia General Assembly. IIAV lobbies on behalf of our members on interest areas including Property/Casualty, Life/Health, Financial Services, Workers Compensation and safety. On occasion IIAV gets involved in legislation related to business operations such as when the association pursued efforts to reign in patent trolls.

Making mid-term policy changes is a normal part of the insurance agency business. In fact, it is so routine that there is a danger of making ordinary, perfunctory policy changes without considering the potential E&O exposure. In particular, there is a big E&O risk when making policy changes based on information or instructions (or lack of information or instructions) from third parties.
