... The results of which were pretty succinctly written in a headline in the Richmond Times Dispatch: “McAuliffe’s blunder on education helped tee up his defeat to Youngkin.” The pundits have of course come up with many, many other reasons for explaining the election results but I’ll stick with this one. As almost an afterthought for the election — though it was top of my mind — was the switch of the majority party in the House of Delegates from the Democrats to the Republicans. A lot of issues are now off the table, none more so than the effort to possibly end Virginia’s Right to Work law — which was massively concerning to the business community.

Asked to participate in two separate legislative study committees, IIAV has participated and submitted comments to be included in reports to legislators. The first study, hosted by the Division of Motor Vehicles, looked to consider allowing motorcycles to lane filter/split and if so, what if any limitations there would be. The second study, hosted by the Virginia State Police, looked at allowing bicyclists to treat stop signs/lights as yield signs. Once the reports are submitted to legislators and the appropriate committee — likely the Transportation Committee in these cases — it will be up to the legislators to pursue, or not pursue legislation.

The American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA) released an important new white paper, “Behavioral Validation of Auto Insurance Rating Variables,” which highlights how many of the most commonly used driving rating factors are related to driving behaviors and the risk of loss. Since the first auto insurance policies were sold nearly 125 years and trillions of miles ago, auto insurance pricing and underwriting has continuously evolved to reflect the countless innovations in motor vehicle technology and design, as well as changes in road and traffic management infrastructure, driving patterns, and behaviors. These innovations continue to evolve today, and telematics, which allow insurers to collect driver behaviors in real time, represents one of the more recent developments in automobile insurance underwriting and pricing. … And other business email questions answered. Communications expert and author Erica Dhawan tells insurance and finance professionals to be "tone deft" instead of tone deaf in business emails. Emojis can provide facial expressions in an email in place of in-person expressions. They also can introduce levity or a humorous tone. Just think carefully before using one, she says.

I was recently sharing a cab with the business owner of a print manufacturer heading to an industry conference where I was slated to be a presenter on workforce trends and solutions. Unfortunately, they have gone to a variety of places and for a variety of reasons.
