John L. "Jack" Echternach Research Award

Congratulations to Zachary Crump, PT, DPT, Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Neurological Physical Therapy, for winning the APTA Virginia John L. "Jack" Echternach Research Award for 2021! Dr. Crump graduated with his DPT in 2010 and has since worked at Sheltering Arms, and currently, Sheltering Arms Institute where he is a clinician scientist and knowledge broker. In his role there, he promotes research and innovation, program development, and knowledge translation and mentoring.

 

He is described as a PT who “figures out some of the tough clinical questions and has the ability to act as a mentor to others in practice.” He follows research closely and disseminates work that is helpful to his fellow therapists. Dr. Crump’s research has included the study of practice on the FES cycle, and how this can influence the outcomes of persons surviving stroke in inpatient rehab. His work in this area has led to clinical practice changes for patients at Sheltering Arms Institute. He has presented on this research during poster presentations for APTA CSM (2018), ACRM (2018), and with an oral presentation at the Virginia Brain Injury Association Heading Forward Together Conference in 2019. He was a co-presenter for a symposium titled “Overcoming Challenges in Clinical Research at the Inpatient Rehabilitation Setting: Lessons Learned.” Most recently, he has been looking to determine what combination of interventions would help those who have a poor prognosis for walking.

 

As a member of APTA Virginia, Dr. Crump is continuing to contribute to research work that looks to improve the practice of physical therapy in Virginia and beyond. Although he has not yet been published for his work, his contributions to research consistently help his fellow clinicians understand current evidence, promote further knowledge, and assist in translating that knowledge to practice. He is an excellent example of a clinician scientist and has outstanding potential for future contributions to the field of physical therapy. Thank you to Dr. Crump and congratulations!
