M. Scott Sullivan Award

 

Congratulations to George Maihafer, PT, PhD for being the 2020 recipient of the APTA Virginia Chapter’s M. Scott Sullivan Leadership Award! Dr. Maihafer has given 45 years of service to our profession and our association, during which time he has demonstrated exceptional leadership. He graduated in 1973 from Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York and began his career in pediatrics. He went on to receive a master’s degree from the University of Kentucky, made his way to Virginia, and took a job at what was Petersburg General Hospital, now known as the Southside Regional Medical Center. In 1982, he moved to a faculty position at Old Dominion University (ODU). He had an incredibly successful career at ODU, where he served as the Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education, associate professor, department chair, and later as the director of the graduate physical therapy program until his retirement in 2016.

 

In a recent interview for ODU, Mr. Maihafer reflected that he guided more than 1,000 students through the physical therapy program during his tenure. It is important to note that he has made many contributions beyond those at ODU and has served our state association in numerous district and chapter positions to include: Tidewater District Chair and Central District Chair, Annual Conference Coordinator, Continuing Education Chair, Public Relations Chair, Nominating member and Chair, Delegate, Political Action Committee Chair, Chief Delegate (2 terms), APTA Virginia President-Elect (2001-2002), APTA Virginia President (2002-2004), and PT Board Member Selection Task Force. Dr. Maihafer was appointed to the Virginia Physical Therapy State Board in 2005 and went on to become the President of the PT Board serving from 2006-2013. While on the Board, he navigated several challenging issues including the issue of dry needling, resulting in the first guidance document on the subject. Dr. Maihafer has not only shown passion for leadership, but also provided guidance and mentoring for others. Being a constant fixture within APTA Virginia for so many years, he is now being recognized for his tireless encouragement, guidance, and ability to encourage and recruit new leaders within our state.
