As 2019 came to a close, many exciting changes were happening with the VPTA! The first, as you may have noticed, was the new name and the new logo! The VPTA is now APTA Virginia. The new logo reflects a unified group of state chapters which helps to unite PTs and PTAs across the country in visibility and advocacy efforts.
Student News
By Ted Compton, SPTA, CPA
My professor, Karen Morey, PT first approached me about attending Lobby Day with her a few weeks into my first semester in Northern Virginia Community College’s Physical Therapist Assistant Program after over 18 years in public accounting. Perhaps I had asked a question or made some comment about printing reams of legislative material in the past that suggested I may be interested in that other, sometimes uncomfortable, side of the profession. Whatever the reason, after a series of surprising steps, I found myself with a scholarship from ATPA-Virginia’s Northern District enabling students to participate and support advocacy on a chilly morning on January 22 in Richmond, Virginia.

Thanks to your advocacy, a January 1, 2020, NCCI edit has been rescinded. This edit caused lower payment when certain common physical therapy codes were claimed on the same day.
We have received the following information from APTA and wanted to be sure you also received this good news:
APTA is pleased to announce that the Department of Defense (DoD) released a final rule to add licensed or certified PTAs as TRICARE-authorized providers operating under the same qualifications established by Medicare. Services must be furnished under the supervision of a TRICARE-authorized licensed physical therapist.
