In 1971, Lewis Walker purchased his first Chevrolet dump truck and was contracted by Culpeper Stone to haul stone, sand, and gravel. Shortly after, Lewis converted his dump truck to a dump trailer, continuing to deliver aggregate products for Culpeper Stone.

In the early 1980s, Lewis & Dorothy Walker opened a sand pit in King George, Virginia for furnishing masonry sand to Culpeper Stone. After a few years, the Walkers began marketing masonry sand and selling their products throughout Northern Virginia, Fredericksburg, and the Richmond area.

Walker Sand & Stone, utilizing backhauls, expanded their product line to include supplying crushed stone and, as their business grew, Walker Sand & Stone, established their King George Sales Yard, shop and offices. Located at the intersection of Rt. 3 & Rt. 301, this facility provides a centrally located base of operations for the Walkers.

Today, Walker Sand and Stone services the Northern Virginia and Richmond markets with masonry sand, furnished sand, stone, landscape products in the Fredericksburg and Northern Neck regions, and supplies VDOT maintenance facilities with sand for snow removal.

From their founding in 1971 with a single truck, Walker Sand and Stone’s operations have grown to include 30 trucks, a sand processing facility, the aforementioned King George sales yard, and 38 employees.

Walker Sand and Stone is truly a family business. Along with Lewis & Dorothy, sons, John and Jeff and daughter-in-law Paige, 2 grandsons, 1 nephew and 1 grandnephew all work with the Company.

Walker Sand & Stone joined VTCA in 2018 and is a certified SWaM business. Please join VTCA in congratulating the Walkers on 50 years of success!
