Mineral Display case with aggregate samples.

Last fall at the Virginia Association of Science Teacher’s (VAST) conference, VTCA’s Aggregate Producers raffled off a mineral display case to a school. The mineral display case was won by a science teacher at Prospect Heights Middle School in Orange, VA.

The dedication was held on April 28 at Prospect Heights Middle School and was a rousing success!

VTCA partnered with the Virginia Chapter of the Friends of Mineralogy to obtain the specimens for the case and develop an accompanying study guide for the teachers.

The case contained 10 samples from nearby aggregate producer members, an asphalt core and concrete core and dozens of other minerals provided by the Friends of Mineralogy.

VTCA wants to thank Ryan Curtis from Vulcan Materials, Trevor Morgan from The Frazier Quarry, and Gary Hurlock of Luck Stone for attending the dedication. It was great to have VTCA members present for the dedication. Libby Pritchard, NSSGA’s Director of Safety Policy, joined us as well!

We could not have put this together without the help of Thomas Hale and Tom Girton of the Friends of Mineralogy.

The intent of the display case is to provide an earth science study resource for the school and emphasize the purpose and importance of minerals, specifically aggregates, in society.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this effort!
