VTCA Preparing for the Upcoming General Assembly

It's that time of year again for our weekly legislative updates from the Virginia General Assembly! The Legislative Session will convene on Wednesday, January 11, at noon. This “short” session should end after 45 days – near the end of February.   

Leadership and committee assignments will be made shortly. Big general topics will be: Adjusting the State Budget, Workforce Development, Mental Health, Education, Affordable Housing, Environment and Electric Management.    

The issues VTCA will focus on will zero in on preserving transportation funding, protecting all members with the Pay-if-Paid changes, working with the Secretary of Labor and Delegate Kathy Byron on workforce development, and environmental issues as they arise. In addition, VTCA will track and update members weekly on issues of importance.   

We greatly appreciate Carter Machinery hosting Governor Glenn Youngkin last week on his rolling out the benefits of his proposed business tax cuts. Several members of the VTCA Legislative Committee attended this event. 

 

Many legislators are keeping an eye on other legislators and potential challengers as all 140 Delegates and Senators are up for re-election in Virginia this November. Expect to see some “brochure” bills this session.  A “Brochure Bill” is introduced by a legislator to gather support from their base for the upcoming election, but often has no realistic possibility of passing.
