At the direction of the Aggregate Producer Leadership Committee and the approval of the VTCA Board of Directors, VTCA has signed with the Virginia Tech Center for Economic and Community Engagement to develop an economic impact study of the aggregate production industry in Virginia.

Virginia Tech Center for Economic and Community Engagement (CECE) proposes to provide a comprehensive economic impact assessment of Virginia’s stone quarry industry for the past ten years (2011-2021). This project includes the compilation of industry data, engagement with industry stakeholders, and the completion of a report on the past, current, and projected crushed stone activity and its associated economic impacts.

While the aggregate industry is essential to building and maintaining the physical infrastructure of the Commonwealth of Virginia, including roads, residential and commercial buildings, most are unaware of its size, activities, and necessity to the state’s economy. There is no documented assessment of the economic impact of crushed stone quarrying in the Commonwealth of Virginia in recent history. Without this analysis, policymakers are unable to appropriately determine the direct and indirect impact of the quarrying industry within the Commonwealth, much less the role it plays in supporting better known industries. The goal of this project is to increase understanding of the aggregate industry and its importance to the larger state economy so that governments and policy makers will be better motivated and informed to support this vital industry.

The intention is to have this study completed by mid-summer and to have it for the upcoming statewide elections later this year.
