Portable Road Sign Tampering

Print this Article | Send to Colleague

Recently, some variable message boards have been tampered with in Virginia and have changed the messages displayed to inappropriate and lude messages. In some cases, the hijacked messages may be misleading and create a safety hazard for the travelling public. Avoid the embarrassment and potential liability and ensure your portable message signs are secured and cannot be altered without the proper credentials. VDOT contractually requires the contractor to physically lock the PCMS control mechanisms at all times while deployed (Spec provision 512.03(s).

These changed messages are being shared on social media from other states as well, and we can expect copy cats to take advantage of unsecured PCM signs wherever they can. While some may find them amusing, misleading messages that could lead to accidents may have a potential liability to the company.
