Recommendation to Preserve Mineral Extraction in Frederick County

On July 20, The Winchester Star reported that the Frederick County Planning Commission voted to recommend the County Board of Supervisors approve the Northeast Land Use Plan (NELUP), which keeps 566 acres reserved for extractive mining.

This is an important decision as VTCA has reported the growing concerns of localities efforts to restrict or eliminate mining from their jurisdictions. The initiative to remove mineral extraction from the Frederick County NELUP was introduced by the County planning staff late last year and was the first of three localities that are trying to restrict mining in the communities through land use.

The Frederick County Board of Supervisors, following the Planning Commission recommendation to keep mineral extraction as part of the NELUP will set an important precedent for other localities to follow.
