A Message on Safety

As we enter the summer season, it is imperative to re-emphasize the critical importance of maintaining rigorous safety standards on all construction sites. The warmer weather brings increased activity and unique challenges that can impact the well-being of our workforce, and we must remain vigilant to prevent accidents and ensure everyone returns home safely each day.

It is with a heavy heart that I reference the recent tragic accident that underscores the vital need for enhanced safety measures. On May 30, a construction inspector lost their life in a nighttime incident on a jobsite. This devastating event has left a profound void in the lives of the inspector's family, his work colleagues, and industry partners working on the job. The loss is not only personal but also deeply felt across our entire industry, as it reminds us of the inherent dangers present in our field.

The accident serves as a stark reminder that safety cannot be compromised. As temperatures rise, so do the risks associated with heat stress, dehydration, and fatigue. Additionally, longer daylight hours can lead to extended workdays and long nights, increasing the likelihood of accidents due to exhaustion and reduced alertness. In this instance, the accident occurred at night, where visibility can be challenging even with PPE. It is our collective responsibility to implement and adhere to stringent safety protocols to mitigate these risks.

Let us honor the memory of our fallen colleague by redoubling our commitment to safety. The impact of a single accident is far-reaching, affecting not just those directly involved but also their families and our industry as a whole. In last week’s memo by the Commissioner to VDOT and the construction industry, if you see something, say something. By working together and prioritizing safety, we can prevent future tragedies and uphold the highest standards of care for our workforce.
