The Transportation Research Board’s (TRB) Weekly newsletter features a “March Spotlight Theme” on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and summarizes a series of interviews and workshops with state departments of transportation.  The article shares that state DOTs are applying AI in applications related to “asset and traffic management; safety; mobility; and maintenance prioritization." The TRB “spotlight” is particularly timely, as VDOT just recently went public with its own pilot program to investigate AI to improve cost estimation and pavement management.  VDOT’s ongoing pilot is being managed by VTCA Associate member, Deloitte Consulting, and will be highlighted at this spring’s Transportation Conference & Trade Show in Norfolk.

For more information on where AI is going with transportation agencies, you can also checkout the “research roadmap” recently completed by researchers at Virginia Tech and available (for free) as NCHRP Web-Only Document 403: Artificial Intelligence Opportunities for State and Local DOTs: A Research Roadmap (2024).
