DOGE Closes Several MSHA Offices

NSSGA and VTCA have recently learned that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has terminated several MSHA office leases, which will result in the closure of MSHA district and field offices around the country. As far as we are aware, this was done based solely on current leases expiring and not in consultation with MSHA.

There are currently twenty-eight office lease terminations listed on the DOGE website. You can find them in the “Wall of Receipts” section under “Savings” and “Real Estate.” The listed offices include:

  • Arlington, VA
  • Craig, CO
  • Green River, WY
  • Barbourville, KY
  • Beaver Dam, KY
  • Hazard, KY
  • Prestonsburg, KY
  • Madisonville, KY
  • Harlan, KY
  • Portsmouth, NH
  • Vacaville, CA
  • Birmingham, AL
  • Geneva, NY
  • St. Clairsville, OH
  • Frackville, PA
  • Waynesburg, PA
  • Mt. Pleasant, PA DO only
  • Rapid City, SD
  • Knoxville, TN
  • San Antonio, TX
  • Longview, TX
  • Summersville, WV
  • San Bernadino, CA
  • Litchfield, IL
  • Hibbing, MN
  • Hebron, OH
  • Alban, NY
  • Vincennes, IN

Mining operations located in the below Virginia Counties are covered and inspected by the Beckley District: 

  • Bland
  • Giles
  • Carroll
  • Montgomery
  • Floyd
  • Pulaski

Mining Operations in all other Virginia Counties remain under the Norton VA District. 

It is NSSGA’s understanding that MSHA has not RIF’d or otherwise terminated impacted employees and is working to justify keeping the offices.
