VDOT is in the process of developing the RFPs for the next section of work on I-81. The work will take place from mile marker 128 to mile marker 137. VDOT has yet to determine if this will be one project or multiple contracts. The project estimate is $750 million and will be offered as a design-build project(s).
In February, VTCA hosted a meeting with VDOT officials and representatives from our contractor members to discuss elements of the project. VDOT felt a similar discussion with the local aggregate producers could garner the same benefit as the discussion with the contractors.
Dave Covington, VDOT I-81 Project Manager, Ken King, Salem District Engineer, and Rob Griffith, Salem District Construction Engineer, laid out the scope of the upcoming I-81 work. Being a design-build project, VDOT was unable to discuss specific materials or quantities, as those will be developed when the selected contractor begins final designs.
However, the project will be significant and encompass large quantities of aggregates for all facets of the work.
The aggregate producers that attended appreciated learning more details about the project and were ready to furnish all the project’s aggregate requirements. This interaction certainly aided the potential aggregate suppliers in planning for the upcoming work.
A similar meeting will be scheduled for work on I-81 in the Staunton District and the local aggregate producers in that market.
