Increased work volumes and workforce shortages are putting a strain on material deliveries for heavy and highway construction projects. VTCA, in exploring ways to ease supply chain delays on these projects, recently asked VDOT to consider looking at increasing the permitted gross vehicle weights (GVW) for trucks hauling construction materials. VTCA asked if GVW for trucks could possibly increase by 10%.
VDOT responded that in the past they have considered an increase in GVW, however due to FHWA – Federal Bridge Formulas, VDOT’s GVWs on trucks is currently at the maximum allowed.
Unfortunately, it appears that increasing truck weights is not an option currently.
VTCA will continue to explore other options to keep materials flowing and jobsites working. Let us know if you have any ideas that can be explored.
