On October 26-27, VTCA hosted a booth at the Mission Tomorrow event put on by Chamber RVA at the Richmond Raceway.

The region’s vitality depends on its future workforce. Mission Tomorrow puts your industry and the skills required on the radar of tomorrow’s workforce. This event is designed to introduce the next generation of the local workforce to a variety of career opportunities available in the region through interactive engagement with the exhibitors.

Over two days, local businesses and organizations got to interact with 12,000 eighth graders who were looking to explore potential career paths. You may wonder why an eighth grader needs to be thinking about future careers now. The answer is that the course choices that a student makes going into their freshman year of high school can impact the career pathways available to them in the future. Talking about things a student likes doing and is good at is a good way to start the discussion about future careers.

Children from all different backgrounds got to stop by the VTCA booth and hear about how a road is made, and all the different people who are involved in the process.  Kids got to also touch plenty of rock samples from the VAST kits that VTCA puts together, with everything from quartz gravel to vermiculite.  The students had plenty of questions about education requirements, safety, salary, and how big trucks in the industry are.  Many of the kids were surprised to learn just how much work goes into making the roads we use every single day. VTCA also got a chance to talk to the educators who work with these students daily, and technical center coordinators as well.

A special thank you to P. D. Brooks Company, Inc. for providing VTCA with bright orange traffic cones to grab the attention of passersby.

We are extremely grateful to have participated in Mission Tomorrow and look forward to hopefully seeing more members at this event next year!
