Governor Glenn Youngkin has completed his review of the 2025 Bills sent to his desk by the Virginia Legislature.  He made adjustments to the State Budget – supporting key aspects of the $188 Billion budget and showing a key focus on possible impacts of federal layoffs by President Trump.  The legislature has formed a State Task Force to address Federal Government spending reductions and layoffs.   
  
The Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance provides financial assistance to help deserving young individuals pursuing education in college or technical education programs that may lead to the transportation construction industry. The scholarships have a value of $5,000 and three scholarships are awarded annually.

Roanoke City Public Schools is implementing a new web-based platform for a Work-Based Learning (WBL) program that will operate as a job-posting board. Students will be able to search for WBL experiences using a variety of keywords and options.

VDOT is in the process of developing the RFPs for the next section of work on I-81. The work will take place from mile marker 128 to mile marker 137. VDOT has yet to determine if this will be one project or multiple contracts. The project estimate is $750 million and will be offered as a design-build project(s).

National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) is a yearly event dedicated to spreading the ever-important awareness of roadway work zone safety. Thanks to support and involvement from organizations and individuals like you, the message of safety continues to grow each year.
 
The Transportation Research Board’s (TRB) Weekly newsletter features a “March Spotlight Theme” on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and summarizes a series of interviews and workshops with state departments of transportation.  The article shares that state DOTs are applying AI in applications related to “asset and traffic management; safety; mobility; and maintenance prioritization."
The Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC) has released two new reports on two recent studies: Interlaboratory Study for the Indirect Tensile at High-Temperature Test and Ideal Rutting Test; and Suitability of Using Crushed Concrete Adjacent to Geotextiles in Underdrain Systems Second Phase: Field Trial Before Implementation.
NSSGA and VTCA have recently learned that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has terminated several MSHA office leases, which will result in the closure of MSHA district and field offices around the country. As far as we are aware, this was done based solely on current leases expiring and not in consultation with MSHA.
NSSGA has filled the vacated position of the Director of Occupational Safety & Health and Director of Sustainability.
In early March, Virginia Tech School of Mining and Minerals Engineering conducted a symposium on the Quarry of the Future. The forum explored the future of the aggregates industry, discussing technology changes and anticipating what is to come.
