SPRING HAS ARRIVED! LET’S GROW THIS APRIL BY CELEBRATING DIVERSITY
April is a month of new birth – Spring has arrived (in most areas!), many religions observe holy days, and it’s a perfect time to celebrate our differences and similarities to gain a deeper understanding of each other.
As a Wnet Board Director and volunteer on numerous teams and task forces, I find that working with others outside of my ecosystem challenges me to be open to new views and ideas, appreciate cultural differences and enjoy fresh perspectives to help create a more inclusive society.
Wnet is focused on expanding our knowledge of diversity in the workplace with special events and highlights for our Career Month, Volunteer Month, and Diversity Month.
In this issue, our DEI Content Task Force shares information about Ramadan, an Islamic holiday (April 2-May 2) marked by fasting, praise, prayer, and devotion to Islam. I hope you take a few minutes to discover more about this month-long holy event that nearly 20% of the U.S. population celebrates. As leaders, we need to continuously challenge ourselves to understand and better acknowledge the diverse cultures of our teams, and April is a perfect time to explore the many special holidays of this month of awakening.

P.S. I’ll be celebrating a new beginning this month: I am getting married on April 16, merging two families with two different cultures! I will be enjoying my honeymoon on the beautiful beaches of Mexico.

Celebrating #GlobalDiversityMonth
Professional Considerations During Ramadan
April is Celebrate Diversity Month, and as such, we wanted to highlight that Ramadan is being observed April 2 - May 2. With limited exceptions, most Muslims will be fasting throughout the month during daytime hours, generally between 11- 6 hours per day. About twenty percent of the population identifies as Muslim, so it is likely there are colleagues around you who are observing Ramadan.
Things to keep in mind this month for your colleagues:
- They will not eat during the day, and likely will not drink water.
- Their sleep schedule might be shifted due to meal times and family gatherings.
- They might need additional time for prayers.
